Tomás Gormley's solo debut, thirteen courses of theatre

Gormley made his name with Heron and Skua, both run with a partner. Cardinal, on Eyre Place, is the first restaurant he's doing alone, and it pushes his casual fine-dining format further into theatre than either of those did.

Thirteen courses lean on fermentation, pickling and open-fire cooking, backed by a low-intervention wine list pulled from around the world. It landed in the Michelin Guide within months of opening.

A very special meal. Lunch was a Mexican themed pop up with small (but not too small!) plates of tacos, oysters, meat vegetarian and fish - fantastic scallops. Service exemplary - knowledgeable, attentive, responsive and not overbearing. It is fine dining but not stuffy or too formal, but you do feel special. Delicious.

We had a spectacular experience at Cardinal to celebrate a birthday! The food was creative and interesting and the wine was absolutely delicious. The sommelier was super knowledgeable about the wines she was serving and did a great job ensuring we had what we wanted. We didn't want a sweet wine at the end and she gave us multiple tasters until we found something to suit us. Particular favourites includes the additional cheese course (a gorgonzola cheese and honey combo on top of a cake!), the gnocchi, mutton, and the apricot financier. Everything tasted better than its description on the menu!

My hotel recommended this restaurant, and what a neighborhood gem it is! I want to recommend it to everyone I know. It was a Wednesday, and they had a pre-set, tasting menu with communal tables. We met the loveliest local couple and went out with them later. The food was amazing, locally sourced cuisine, with pickled leeks from last season. They even recycled non-food waste into a dessert, avoiding waste. Truly a gem in a relaxed atmosphere.

This is my 2nd visit since Cardinal opened. I booked their 3 course tasting menu as a relaxed mid week get together for friends. We were blown away by the experience. Utterly amazing. We had the most relaxed enjoyable meal. Staff were incredibly helpful. Food was stunning. Before our starter we were served a beautiful onion soup with pine oil, followed by the most amazing brioche buns! We added the cheese course to our 3 course tasting menu. A very special evening. Thank you! 5*

We recently opted for the Full Experience menu and overall had a very good night. The amuse-bouche made an immediate and lasting impression, beautifully balanced, full of flavour, and setting an exciting tone for what followed. The leek dish was another standout: refined, elegant, and layered with flavour. The cheese course was equally memorable, with a thoughtful combination of textures and a well-judged interplay between savoury and sweet. The lobster course, however, did not fully come together for us. While the individual components were interesting on their own, the overall structure (especially of the lobster) felt off and the combination of the different elements did not fully harmonise. It also felt slightly misplaced in the progression of the menu and might have worked better later on. Across the menu, fermentation and sour notes were quite present. At times these flavours felt dominant and we missed some additional layers and contrast, similar to the balance achieved in the amuse-bouche. The wine pairing featured interesting wine houses and thoughtful selections. Most of the wines were nice but also here the acidity was too high though nothing particularly stood out. The sommelier was knowledgeable; however, the explanations felt a bit rushed, which made the storytelling element of the pairing less engaging than it could have been.
