Nishiki

★ 4.7 · 162 reviews Edinburgh Opened August 2025

A 40-cover izakaya near Haymarket, with one of Scotland's first sake-only bars.

Nishiki opened on Morrison Street in August 2025 as an izakaya-style gastropub, built around a bar that treats sake as the main event rather than a footnote on the wine list, one of the first setups like it in Scotland. The 40-cover room skips the lantern-heavy izakaya look for a spare Japandi style: light wood, soft lighting.

The menu runs past the usual evening sharing plates, covering breakfast through afternoon tea into dinner. It sits near Haymarket station in the West End, a part of town picking up new openings as Edinburgh's dining scene spreads past Old Town and Leith.

Delicious gluten-free Japanese breakfast, perfectly paired with the Iced Sunrise Black Tea (which I highly recommend). Nishiki offers a truly memorable culinary and cultural experience! The restaurant’s atmosphere was authentic and full of character. The staff was also attentive and welcoming :)

We had the Shiro Ramen, Edamame and Karaage. It literally was from the quality comparable to Japan (and I really dont say that lightly). Especially the broth, as well as the chashu was exceptional. The noodles were ok, probably not self-made, but together with the eggs, the exceptional broth and chashu amazing. One of the best Ramen Restaurants in Europe we have been to. Also our waiter Sam was very nice and created a great atmosphere. The only things I would not recommend: - Drinks: Very sugary and overpriced. - „Sushi“: It was actually really good, but too expensive for the quantity.

Absolutely adored my visit to Nishiki, it was easily one of the nicest dining experiences I have had in Edinburgh. The minimalist decor and warm lighting in the restaurant was just stunning. I also very much appreciated the design and use of Helvetica on the menus. The food was just as impressive as the setting. Every dish felt carefully crafted, but the highlights for me were definitely the chicken skin skewers and the miso aubergine. Service was excellent throughout the evening, especially from my server Yu, who was lovely and gave my table excellent recommendations for what to order and who taught us the word ‘Japandi’ - the name for this specific style of interior design.

The service was nice , few missing items on the menu not necessary bad thing as means is fresh and sold out! However I went with group of friends one of them don’t eat seafood. And the pork katsu wasn’t available. Other food really lovely and up skills, something different. Service very attentive so the visit overall was good.

We had dinner here last night, and the food and service were excellent. They even gave us a complimentary birthday drink when we mentioned it was our birthday when we made the reservation. It's definitely worth a visit.
