Welsh bread and sandwiches on Choumert Road
Welsh cooking barely registers in London kitchens, which makes Bara worth the detour. The name means bread in Welsh, and it runs the whole menu: sandwiches and counter food built on Welsh produce, from a team that includes a MasterChef: The Professionals alum.
It sits on Choumert Road, the pedestrianised strip that anchors Peckham's independent food scene off Rye Lane. Nothing else nearby is doing this angle.

As an aged Welshman who has now lived in SE London longer than I ever did in Cardiff, I thought I should go and have a look at Bara. We arrived at around 1pm on a Saturday and were seated quickly by very friendly and attentive staff and the service remained excelled throughout. The weekend menu was 4 brunch dishes and 4 sandwiches plus 2 specials, but only half were left, and the menu is already pretty meat heavy, so options were a bit limited. One of us had the VE tofu sandwich and it wasn’t good, or in any way, shape or form Welsh (maybe put a leek in it?). One of us had the mussels in cider and said they were delicious. They looked great, but came with bacon (very Welsh!) and I don’t eat pork so I had the crab rarebit (last one off the brunch menu, phew!) and it was okay. I also had the Bloody Mary and that was brilliant! Laver round the rim, and 2 pickled onions on a cocktail stick that just somehow fed my hiraeth proper and felt like the most Welsh thing ever. And the soap in the toilet was from Wales too. Well done👍🏴

Food was great. Been meaning to try it since I found out code app users get 30% off - makes it a lot more accessible! I thought it would just be pastries etc, but great food with fun names. Caerphilly cheesesteak? Obsessed. It’s gorgeous and green, and I think sitting outside in the sun would be great. My only quarrel was the vibe inside. The amount of babies and toddlers kinda took away from the ‘cool’ and novelty vibe, and kinda just made it feel like any old regular family cafe. I think that, with the niche concept, great food, and especially the central Peckham location, it has the potential to curate a far better atmosphere. More importantly, it’s needed to keep up with other businesses. Otherwise, 10/10 - come check it out. Thank you for putting wales on the map.

I love Bara cafe! Gorgeous vibe especially on a lovely sunny Saturday morning. The service was perfect, the team so attentive and bubbly. Iced coffee was amazing and the lobster roll (only available on Saturdays) was absolutely delicious. I’ll be returning very soon 🫶

visited a couple weeks ago and picked up one of the miso brown butter chocolate chip cookies. slightly crisp on the outside with a chewy interior, can definitely see why this is raved about. will definitely return for the bara birth and the savoury options! p.s. sorry for breaking one of y’all’s bottled waters, your staff were super kind about it 😭🫶🏻

The food was absolutely exceptional. I highly recommend the Swansea Breakfast and the pancakes. The service was amazing and atmosphere was top tier. Believe the hype. I was pleasantly surprised and I loved the commitment to Welsh produce and supporting Welsh businesses. This place is going to put Welsh food culture on the map. I also noticed it was very toddler friendly.
