A bakery on upper Meeting Street that bets everything on the bread

Skip the eggs and avocado toast. Grit Bakery does one thing, sourdough and pastry, and skips the wider café menu most bakeries lean on to fill the room.

That narrow focus is the point: the bread carries the business. Upper Meeting Street has filled in fast with new openings the past two years, and Grit's bread program stands out from most of them.

5++ stars! I was lucky enough to live in the same building as this bakery from basically the day they opened to now. They are amazing! I’ve never had anything bad! The “GRIT” cookie might be the best ever! And the seasonal danish flavors and twists are amazing! Everyone is so sweet and don’t sleep on the best baguettes in town! Coffee is also really good. Also I have been to almost every bakery in Charleston and this place is top of the list.

best koign amann in town! the staff has been so nice every time we come in and there is always places to sit, it’s rarely super crowded. their baguettes are hard not to eat in one sitting and every pastry i’ve tried has impressed me! their prices are super reasonable!

Amazing bread and pastries, made on site. Small business. Great coffee. Friendly people. Quiet space. Local sources. Free parking. It seems too good to be real. Grit Bakery, how is it that we are just now meeting? Where have your strawberry scones been all my life? Is this what I’ve been missing?

Grit is the best bakery I’ve ever visited! MJ was so lovely to talk with, and everything we tried was incredible! The croissants, banana bread, cheddar jalapeño biscuits, and the specialty hazelnut croissant were all outstanding. This spot is an absolute must-visit when you’re in Charleston!
