Sunday Sauce

New Jersey red sauce lands on North Killingsworth

This is the plate to order if you miss a long-simmered tomato gravy: Sunday Sauce cooks New Jersey style red sauce food, heavier and slower than the restrained Italian cooking Portland usually goes for. Get anything with the sauce on it, that's the whole point.

Meatballs and a plate of rigatoni are the safest way in, and the clearest sense of what the kitchen is chasing.

I finally got a chance to make it here, but for lunch. I still need to find a time to come for dinner. The lunch menu is just pretty much samdwiches and some salads. We had the chicken parm and Italian grinder. Both sandwiches were of good size and perfect for sharing. I enjoyed both, but if had to choose, I would pick the grinder again. I do want to try some of their other sandwiches next time and hopefully dinner soon.

Best Caesar salad I've ever had — and I don't say that lightly. Not drowning in dressing the way most places do it. Olives, lemon, anchovies, all of it perfectly balanced. The salted caramel pudding for dessert was genuinely perfect. All of the desserts sound incredible. The room is what makes the whole thing click. It feels like a party and a family dinner at the same time — comfortable, inviting, warm staff who made me feel welcome. Can't wait to come back.

Tried Sunday Sauce and had a great experience. The Sunday Sauce pasta paired with the cheesy garlic bread was my favorite—super flavorful and satisfying. The space is a bit smaller than I expected, but it gives it a cozy feel. Staff was friendly, and service was quick—we were seated within 5–10 minutes. Overall, a solid spot and I’m looking forward to coming back to try more dishes.

A buzzy spot with flavorful dishes. The fried mutz was perfectly crispy and cheesy. Highly recommend the Bada Bing cocktail, it was perfectly balanced, not too tart not too sweet. We split the Sunday sauce and Caesar salad. Probably one of the best Caesar salads I've had in while, the dressing feels made in house. The Sunday sauce was rich and savory but not too salty. It had soft beef in it, and was topped with meatballs and sliced sausage. Very comforting. Ended with the banana tiramisu, doesn't taste strongly of banana, it's just a creamy slightly lighter, fluffier tiramisu-- very tasty. Would definitely come back again, just make sure to arrive before 5:30 if you want to wait less than 30 minutes. They are rightfully busy so there's quite a wait-list and a loud lively atmosphere. A perfect neighborhood spot!

Like eating at your Italian grandmas house. So warm and welcoming. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and the portions were very generous for the price. We brought our own wine (corkage fee was only $30) and they even made a point to bring us the proper wine glasses for the 2017 Pinot. They don’t take reservations so we did have to wait over an hour, but it was 7pm on Saturday so that’s expected. Plus there are plenty of of bars within a block radius to grab a cocktail at while you’re waiting.
