Sicilian cooking in a revived Pernicano's room

Sicilian-leaning Italian, lunch and dinner daily, with a cheese wheel right there on the counter. Order the pasta finished in it once and then never again, which is the correct number of times.

Amuri opened in December 2025 at 9932 Mercy Road in Mira Mesa, in a unit that used to be one of the Pernicano's restaurants. Only the El Cajon branch of that chain is still standing.

I was excited to try out this somewhat new Italian place in the neighborhood. We ordered many pasta dishes including cheese wheel with mushroom and sausage, which was pretty good. I ordered seafood special. It was okay. Overall, the pasta dishes would taste better if they are not too salty. I’d love to go back to try their dessert next time as i was too full to have some this time.

I visited Amuri for lunch and the place was quite busy for a weekday. There was one waiter managing all tables and he did a great job. I ordered the Involtini di melanzane (roasted eggplant stuffed with ricotta) and Pistacchiosa pasta (pistachio pesto with burrata cheese), both dishes were quite good. Our waiter went the extra mile and took the Pistacchiosa pasta back and had the chef boil the noodles more to suit our liking.

A San Diego hidden gem! Such a cute little spot with a beautiful design/decor and great drinks & dishes to choose from. I had attended the grand opening of Amuri where I got a small taste of what they had to offer and it definitely made me want to come back for more. Everything we ordered was full of flavor, you definitely have to top off your meal with the table-side tiramisu, it was FRESHHH. The way the espresso soaked into the lady fingers with the fresh mascarpone on the top was to die for. Nino, who was also the owner, took such great care of us, we will be back again for more Amuri❤️

We tried this new place with my parents in law, and my mother in law has Italian blood! They were so happy about this meal and said probably is one of the best they tried in these couple of years. We had a cheese wheel Gnocchi, it is wow, so flavorful, the gnocchi cooked perfectly. We also had a cacio e Pepe, which is a little different than we had in other places, which was more creamy. We loved it. Other than that, we had a carpaccio, a blue cheese salad, meatball and complimentary breads. All of those are good, we don’t have any negative feedback about here’s food. The service was not bad either. We tried a bottle of wine (Chianti) and Sicilian spritz, my hubby and I ended to order one more spritz for each one and parent ordered more wine… it was so delicious. Also our baby had a great time because he enjoyed the olive oil bread and meatball!

We love trying new places during restaurant week so we made a reservation for a Wednesday night. Upon walking in, we were impressed by the beautifully decorated dining room. Unfortunately things kind of went downhill from there. We were greeted by someone who already looked annoyed that we were there. We figured it had been a busy night so we let it pass. We were seated quickly and our order was taken within 5 minutes. While we waited for our appetizers, we were served table bread. It was soft on the inside with a beautiful crunch on the outside, drizzled with some olive oil and sprinkled with herbs. Our appetizers came out rather quickly, which was a nice surprise. We tried the Arancini and the Meatballs. Both were delicious choices. We looked forward to our entrees. 30 minutes passed. Then 45. Our waiter never came to check on us. We asked someone else if they could check on our food. Never heard back. Finally, after waiting 60 minutes, we asked to speak with a manager. After checking on our order, he said there was some confusion in the kitchen. Seems like our entree ticket was never put in. They quickly worked on our food and the manager apologized profusely. The entrees we tried were the Short Rib served over Polenta as well as the Salmon over Risotto. Both entrees were outstanding, although the risotto could have used a little more time in the pan as there were some pieces that seemed under. We ended up taking our desserts (cannoli and limoncello cake) home because it was late, but those were also well made also. I will say that if the food wasn’t delicious, I would never give this place a second thought. However, because the dishes we tried were good, I would absolutely give them a second chance. I do think their staff needs a little extra training, but the manager made up for that as well. He did mention that their restaurant had only been open a few months, so maybe in another few months some of these issues will have been ironed out. Our compliments to the chef. We hope to enjoy a meal here again in the future.
