New Mexican chile in Mission Hills
San Diego has one or two of these and no more. Ask for Christmas if you can't choose between red and green.
Wolf in the Woods sits at 1920 Fort Stockton Drive in Mission Hills, cooking New Mexican cuisine. That means green chile is a decision you have to make about almost everything on the menu.

Loved our dinner at Wolf In The Woods! The steak tartare was so flavorful and probably my favorite dish of the night. The yellowtail was also amazing, really fresh with just the right amount of spiciness. The Carne Adovada pork shoulder was so tender and delicious. Great service and atmosphere, and so many great options to choose from. Planning our next visit soon!

This tiny gem of a restaurant truly lives up to it's hype. The moment we arrived at the location, hidden in a lovely neighborhood in Mission Hills, off the beaten path, the service was friendly and elegant. We managed to get last minute reservations at the bar by the beautiful flower arrangement (have you ever seen black roses?). We started with the happy hour drink, Venice Sunset, served with their signature home made potato chips. Both were unexpectedly unique. You have to try them to understand. It's a Spain, New Mexico fusion and their theme is tapas. We're vegetarian and they recommended that most people order 4 to 6 share plates. We tried the special, which was sugar snap peas š« on a sesame seed sauce (think hummus but lighter) with lemon zest and mint š (surprisingly incredible), a delicate, generous cheese board with 4 cheeses š§, all delicious, sweet corn š½ and piƱon soup (with hatch chile corn fritters and pine nuts, perhaps the highlight of our meal! I know, just soup, right?), and the maize & hen in the woods, which is a mushroom (no chicken) š prepared crispy roasted with sundried tomatoes, pesto, and shaved pecorino over a creamy polenta with mascarpone cheese. It seemed like every ingredient was hand picked at a farmers market. Exquisitely prepared. Their wine suggestion paired perfectly! We told them how phenomenal everything was, and the owner and his wife thanked us from across the bar. This place was truly amazing, the experience was a work of art. Highly recommended.. Just wanted to add that we came back again and the food was still amazing, Heidi, our waitress was so wonderful.

The experience was just the tip of the iceberg. From the moment we arrived, every detail reflected the warmth and hospitality that New Mexico is known for. Chef Carmine and her team have crafted a menu that takes you on a flavorful journey, blending bold Southwest influences with refined culinary artistry. Every dish was clean, vibrant, and beautifully balancedānever overwhelming the palate, yet packed with unforgettable flavor. Each bite showcased fresh ingredients and thoughtful preparation, making it clear that every plate is created with passion and purpose. Nothing we tasted fell short of exceptional. Every course exceeded expectations and left us wanting more. If you havenāt experienced Wolf in the Woods, youāre doing yourself a disservice. This is more than a mealāitās a true New Mexico dining experience that deserves to be enjoyed.

Wolf in the Woods is a cozy & romantic hidden gem located inside a beautiful neighborhood in Mission Hills. The team were friendly and welcoming to us first and second timers. This is not a snobby or judgmental tourist trap. You know itās good when you see locals that are frequent visitors here. Moreover, all the food we tried here were very delicious and carefully plated to look like art. My only tip is that the pork shoulder needed some chili peppers to balance out the saltiness. We also appreciate the attention to detail involved in the romantic interior/exterior design to go along with the restaurantās Mexican/European/Native American cuisine & aesthetics. The cuisine and atmosphere experience took me back to living in Spain for a moment. Tip: If you donāt like sitting too close to strangers than the patio seating would be much better. My recommendations: -The famous Corn soup -Yellowtail Ceviche -focaccia bread -along with hen mushroom polenta -beef tataki -pork shoulder with fried bread if you have room -mini burger -donāt forget the kakaw chocolate pot mmm -both mocktails on the menu were refreshing

Favorite restaurant in San Diego, the ambience, location, corn soup, wine pairings. Everything is perfection! My husband lived in Sante Fe for years and loves the New Mexico influence. Great date night spot, and I've also enjoyed taking out of towners.
