grade b's first Hanoi shop, steps from the Opera House

grade b made its name in Saigon with shops in Thảo Điền, on Đồng Khởi and on Tôn Thất Thiệp, selling ceramics, wooden objects and indigo-dyed linen and silk. Its first Hanoi store sits at 01 Nguyễn Khắc Cần, a couple of minutes' walk from the Opera House and Tràng Tiền.

Part of the shop works like a gallery. It has shown Vũ Đức Hiếu's Mường-inspired ceramics, and the shelves rotate more than a homeware store usually would. Alongside the pottery there are natural-wood objects made in small runs, plus indigo textiles dyed on selected linen and silk. Go for one good piece, not a haul.

Good to know

  • Check the Instagram before visiting, the shop hosts short shows by individual ceramic artists.
  • It is a two-minute walk from the Opera House, at the Tràng Tiền end.

I found this shop by chance in HCMC and was excited to find they also had a shop in Ha'noi too. So when I returned home I paid them a vist. Whilst much of their stock is duplicated between the two shops (obviously🤣), I was pleased to find some regional differences and stock nuances. I was also pleased to find that their year end sale was still on, and that tge Ha'noi staff were as kind, friendly, and helpful as the HCMC staff were. This shop has a larger floorspace and is set on three floors, it also has a really interesting gallery on the 3F. There is a LOT of stock and the same tranquil vibe as HCMC. The staff are there to assist with your purchases, but don't follow or bother you. I really love their products which I would describe as Viet'namese minamalist. They have clearly been influenced by contemporary Japanese retailers, but it's more of an homage than a pastiche or parody. If you are looking for some contemporary tablewear or interior items which don't dominate your home's visual narrative, I would definitely pay them a visit.
