From wine shop to restaurant, wine still runs the show

Bâton opened on the Nauwstraat in Mechelen in mid-May 2024, taking over the space that used to hold Balls & Glory. Wim Dons and Ilse Van Cauwenbergh used to run a wine shop here and swapped the bottles-to-go for tables and a kitchen.

A chef and a dedicated wine lead build the menu together, with daily-fresh dishes that shift with the seasons. Wine is still the backbone of the place, just poured with dinner now instead of packed in a bag.

Very friendly welcome and service. The restaurant was practically full. All starters (subtly "pushed" by the staff as "sharing") at €19, that is quite steep. Main courses: again steeply priced; €31 for an original and tasty burger in a good bun with a tasty salad, but where you don't even get fries with it (despite asking and insisting). A veggie main course (which did come with sweet potato fries!) at €30: again slightly overpriced. Nice drinks and wine list. In my opinion, just a little too little "value for money".

Honestly? Tasty, flavorful, but in my eyes overpriced or portions too small. "Have a starter to share, and then a main course," was the advice. In hindsight, we had too many starters. Bread, 4 thin slices for 3.50 euros? Agreed to put bread on the menu separately and chargeable, but this... it's a good thing the flavorful dishes made up for it. The vegan sausage was a disappointment. Another point for improvement... provide at least one children's dish, and it absolutely doesn't have to be a currywurst with fries, absolutely not, but either children aren't welcome here or the staff never comes here to eat with children. Make something with sweet potato fries or a mini version of that tasty burger, but nothing? And serving drinks for children in tall wine glasses?

Nice new discovery in Mechelen, able to share starters, always interesting, glass of wine, sure let's try one, that's what I call customer minded. Main dish well balanced. Can we reach heaven with the dessert... Yes we arrived there
