Classic German cooking in a restored 1915 banquet hall

Wiener schnitzel, beef roulade, tableside-carved steaks, a Hamburg-style Pannfisch: DEER keeps mostly to the classical register inside the restored banquet hall of Landhaus Walter, the Fritz Schumacher building in Stadtpark that spent years under renovation after changing hands in 2023.

A handful of modern, largely plant-based plates get worked into the same menu, and the beer garden outside got redesigned alongside the dining room.

Our first visit to DEER in the city park – and we were thoroughly impressed! The location alone was fantastic: both the outdoor area and the interior are stylish, modern, and cozy at the same time. You immediately feel at ease and can tell that great attention has been paid to atmosphere and details. The service is young, dynamic, and exceptionally attentive. The team creates a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere and contributes significantly to a successful evening. DEER also impressed us with its cuisine. The dishes are beautifully presented and demonstrate a great deal of creativity. The use of regional ingredients fits perfectly with the concept, and everything tasted absolutely perfect. We were particularly impressed by the ramen-style steak tartare – an extraordinary combination and a true highlight of the evening. We will definitely be back!

We sat outside next to the beer garden, which was lovely, though a bit crowded due to the World Cup broadcast. The fish menu from Hamburg's culinary offerings was excellent. The service could have been a bit more attentive; the first course arrived after almost an hour. The entire meal was served in 45 minutes. Nevertheless, we were well taken care of with Sancerre and delicious bread.
