Lunch alone, dinner to share: Austrian-German cooking in St. Johannis
Die Kugel opened on Wiesentalstraße on April 30, 2026, with chef Luca Niemann running the kitchen. Lunch stays simple: classic single portions, no fuss. Dinner flips the format into a sharing menu built around plates like a Wiener schnitzel meant for the middle of the table.
The name means "the ball" or "sphere" in German, and nobody on staff will explain why. It's a small joke the restaurant keeps to itself, printed straight-faced at the top of the menu.

We had the vegetarian menu and were absolutely thrilled – our culinary highlight was the carrots, we've rarely eaten such delicious ones – and the butter was amazing!! The staff is very friendly and the wine selection is also great. I highly recommend it.

Anyone looking for high-quality Austrian food will definitely find it here. The atmosphere is very pleasant and invites you to linger. I recommend coming in a group of four with good appetites and trying your way through the entire menu. Vegetarians will also be very happy here, even if they order the fantastic potato salad without the schnitzel.
