Anemos

A brand-new kissaten that plays it old-school
Siphon coffee, thick toast, a room quiet enough to hear the clock tick. That's the classic kissaten format, and Anemos is doing it with a twist: most shops like this were inherited from a previous generation, but this one opened fresh in 2025.
It's on the second floor, north of the botanical gardens. Walk the Kamo river afterward, it's at its best along this stretch.

A quiet coffee shop nestled in a tranquil residential area of Kitayama. "ANEMOS" is a sister shop opened last year by the owner of the beloved "Kaze to COFFEE Kissaten Kazeko." The interior, utilizing the structure of an old Western-style building, exudes a distinctly international atmosphere from the walls and carpets, creating an elegant and classically retro space. While Kissaten Kazeko evokes Showa-era retro charm, ANEMOS offers a European ambiance. Despite its sophisticated atmosphere, the owner's service is incredibly friendly, making it a comfortable and relaxing coffee shop where time seems to slow down. While Kissaten Kazeko is famous for its French toast, ANEMOS's signature dish is waffles, which pair perfectly with their carefully brewed coffee. The waffles look substantial, but they are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, with a light texture that makes them easy to eat. The first time I visited, both the waffles and terrine were sold out, which was disappointing, but on my second visit, I was finally able to enjoy the waffles and hojicha terrine I'd been craving. I was able to fully enjoy the luxurious space and wonderful atmosphere, and had an elegant and incredibly happy time.

I visited on a weekday lunchtime and found the space quiet and very comfortable. The dark roast coffee and waffles were delicious.

The coffee was delicate and intricate. The donuts were not my style, but they were not too sweet and had a light taste. The atmosphere of the shop reminded me of a cafe in a classic hotel (not flashy but chic), and I felt completely refreshed. I was also glad to see the snow-capped Mt. Hiei. The building is old, so it was a little cold, but that was also part of the charm. I found a coffee shop in Kitayama that I cannot miss.

A lovely retro coffee shop hidden in a residential neighborhood north of the city center. With a gorgeous interior and a Louis Armstrong record playing in the background, I really enjoyed my iced cafe latte! Can’t wait to go back and try one of their homemade waffles!
