FUGLEN KYOTO
★ 4.0 · 86 reviews Kyoto Opened 18 December 2025
Oslo's light-roast bar picked a residential street in Shichiku
Fuglen opened its first Kansai location on December 18, 2025, skipping the tourist districts entirely. Shichiku is a quiet residential pocket in the north of Kyoto. The team said they wanted time to learn the neighborhood before serving a queue.
The roast is Nordic-light, so the coffee comes out fruity and almost tea-like. Daily brew runs ¥460, hand-brewed single origins ¥750, and the Norwegian brown cheese toast is ¥1,000. Bring your own food if you want. Doors open at 7am.

This specialty coffee shop, specializing in light roasts, first opened in Tokyo in 2012 and has been gradually expanding its number of stores. Despite its inconvenient location, it's bustling even on weekdays. They only serve light meals, and seating is limited. Around 1:30 PM on a weekday, there were 4-5 groups inside. The outdoor seating is incredibly pleasant, so I recommend visiting on a sunny spring or autumn day. [What I ate] Iced Latte ¥770 Brown Cheese Cookie ¥480 Quite pricey, isn't it? (^_^;) But delicious. The cookie has a subtle salty cheese flavor and isn't too sweet; it's a superb item that pairs well with the refreshing latte. The staff were very friendly, and the time spent relaxing while enjoying the breeze was wonderful. I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you for the meal!

Lovely coffee shop. Was very quiet and peaceful when I was there (earlier in the day) so there was no issues getting a seat to relax into the morning. Had two coffees while there, both were exceptional and probably the best coffee I've had whilst in Japan, and if they offer you pantries, take one, you won't regret it.

I’m not sure why but they don’t allow customers wait inside to order. The staff had me wait outside until they took other customers’ orders even though there was enough space inside. It didn’t take too long to get in, but I don’t think I’d come back on a hot or cold day if they keep customers standing like that. The coffee was good but nothing really special. Somehow the place seemed to be lacking authenticity. It felt too sophisticated and commercial to relax. Perhaps it’s a place for the people who want to look cool, not the ones who actually enjoy coffee.

I had brown cheese toast, a donut, and iced coffee. The toast was exquisite, with the rich texture of goat's milk cheese perfectly complementing the subtle sweetness of Calpis butter. It paired wonderfully with the light, mild-roasted coffee. Despite its extremely inconvenient location, the place was overflowing with customers. Just like in Tokyo, it was a great shop.

This shop offers good coffee, and the cheese toast was really unique and delicious. The ordering/seating policy is not enjoyable as they have the customers wait outside in the cold serving one person at a time. Seating is limited inside
