Lignum

★ 4.2 · 271 reviews Kyoto Opened 2025

A café that moved and got better

Lignum's new room in Gokomachi, near Ebisugawa, is bigger than the old one, and the baking list grew right along with it. A couple of streets from the Imperial Palace grounds, it sits in one of the quieter central pockets of Kyoto.

The block is mostly old shops and small galleries. Sit for two hours on a weekday afternoon and nobody will hurry you.

Amazing food but don't come here if you're in a rush!

One of the best breakfast places I've been to in Japan. It takes a while to get the food, but that's just because of the attention to detail the chef puts into everything.

Their croissants are of the best kind, crispy, sweet, and full of almond paste. By contrast, the almond croissants in the declining “Maison Kayser” shops these days only have an irregular fluffy look and are made with hardly any real almond content!

I went here every day on my 4-day Kyoto trip. The breakfast dishes, the spaghetti, and the pear combucha were all amazing. High quality ingredients. The kitchen is open, right behind the bar so you can see the food being prepared with good hygiene. The chef and the staff are very kind and lovely. This place deserves all the love.
