A parent-and-child café by Shimogamo Shrine, built on yakuzen and specialty coffee

watoto opened on 3 February 2025 in a quiet block near Shimogamo Shrine, run by a parent and their adult child. The kitchen works from yakuzen and fermentation: koji, miso, pickles, dishes built around what those do to vegetables rather than to meat.

Coffee is specialty grade and taken as seriously as the food, which isn't always true at a lunch café. The room is small and modern in a Japanese way, wood and paper, not much decoration. Worth pairing with a walk through Tadasu no Mori.

Wonderful ambience and delicious food and drink. Mahito-san is a genius mixologist, crafting some of the finest cocktails my wife and I enjoyed while in Japan. Cannot recommend more highly
