Where else in Bergen does a chocolate counter turn into a cocktail bar once the sun sets? AJ Chocolate House takes drinking chocolate seriously, then switches gears after dark.
It sits on the Nordnes end of Strandgaten, quieter than the Torgallmenningen side and worth the walk for it. Grab a pavement table when the weather cooperates, which in Bergen is never a given.

This place closed in May 2025.It is now the wine bar Den Svarte Hane.

I've visited this place around four times. The chocolate is great, with a vast variety of tasty Belgian chocolates. Beautifully decorated and cozy. Unfortunately, there have been two times I felt weird. The first time we ordered in the bar and paid, we enjoyed our drinks, and when we were ready to leave, the waiter stopped us insisted that we didn't pay (we were just 2 tables by the time so it wasn't a busy day). We said that we paid, of course, but she was just sure we didn't! We had to show her our credit account. I felt really embarrassed. I although visited this place again, and I think that everyone can have a second chance. Last time we came with friends and their child, the store was totally empty (morning time). The waiter asked if we had reservations, which we hadn't. So we had to leave. The weird thing was that we passed in front of the store an hour later, and there were just two tables occupied, which I thought was very weird since the waiter informed us that they were fully booked. Maybe they're not child friendly? I really don't understand. That makes me two times I felt unwelcome. I really liked this place but I'm not visiting again...

I love my hot chocolate drink and I had the best hot chocolate here that I have had in all of Norway! Also the several selections of chocolates I had were amazing.

5 star hot chocolate to drink. 4 star individual chocolate treats. The service was also fantastic and the atmosphere is a fun old wooden/moody bar inside with overstuffed rich green couches. Very fun.

Cute and cozy spot for dessert and a hot chocolate or nightcap. This seems like one of the only places in town that’s open past 10pm. The waiter was very friendly and informed
