Skip the wine list. Syden, Beibi is built around games: shuffleboard, darts, arcade machines and karaoke, tucked just behind Stavanger's most colourful street.

The fit-out took two and a half years and three million kroner to turn an empty space into this. It shares a serving licence with the bar next door, Hanekam, so one drink order lets you wander between both rooms.

A cool bar in the heart of Stavanger. Pleasant and eloquent barman was happy to shoot the breeze and go through drinks options. We chose three El Diablo cocktails, which were delicious but seemed very expensive, even by Norwegian standards, at around 200NOK each (EUR 18, GBP 15). The outside area is a great place to sit, relax and people watch, especially the day trippers scurrying back to their cruise ships!

We were there early on a Friday night and there was space. We settled in but after a while we were asked to move because someone had reserved this table but they hadn't put up a reserved sign. We were a group and arrived at different times. As this was a company event I asked if I could put a card at the bar so that we got everything on a joint bill but that was not possible. I could also have imagined a better selection of beer - here it looked like most of it was Lervig except for a couple of Nøgne Ø varieties.
