A speakeasy hiding behind an esoteric shop

Behind the esoteric shop in Malasaña sits an author-cocktail speakeasy you have to earn. Say the password at the counter, or ring the bell after hours.

Mentalist Pablo Raijenstein and Hugo Boscovich built the concept around Margaret Modlin, a real former neighbour known as the painter of the apocalypse. Mediterranean food, cocktails and the odd mentalism show round it out.

Amazing place! I went there twice during my stay in Spain and it was great. Had tried both tarot and hand-reading, intresting expirience worth the price. Food is tasty and drinks are delish!

This bar is awesome (understatement). Everyone is so welcoming and fun. Special shout out to Lucas for the tarot reading and Maleni and Nerea for the amazing drinks and delicious food :) Will definitely tell my friends to come here

I stumbled on Esotérica at the end of my night and was immediately enchanted. I chose a cocktail and a tarot reading with Lucas, which was very meaningful. Nerea and Male were the perfect hosts. The music was also memorable, notably Yan Wagner Bluelines. It reminded me of an underground speakeasy of times past. Five star!

Fantastic experience! Nerea and Ale were great! Extremely friendly and truly enjoyable people to talk with throughout the night. Definitely recommend for anyone looking to try something away from stereotypical bar atmosphere.

I don’t know how to properly praise this gem of a bar. I wouldn’t do it justice without mentioning Nerea and Ale. I’ve never met a more welcoming and hospitable duo in my entire life. Not only did they immediately feel like friends, but they went above and beyond to make us feel like home the entire night. We conversed, we joked, and they even gave us some freebies since we came on a non peak weeknight. Can’t say enough good things about these two. The atmosphere is exactly what you would hope for. The esoterica is there. The art is one of a kind, fitting, and fascinating. The music is a vibe and I definitely saved their playlist. If you like David lynch you’re at home. And the sign readings…I’d be better off letting my wife speak to that because that’s her element but she was giddy. The drinks were perfect. I don’t even like cocktails that much and there was the perfect drink for me. And the presentation was perfection. Plus, their liquor selection was robust and fitting for multiple scenarios. The bartender Ale made sure to curate his recommendations perfectly for what we were in the mood for. AND my wife’s drink (espresso martini reimagined) was one of the best I’ve ever had. It’s lively but not packed. You must come here. This place is an absolute gem.
