The Xindian old-house cafe grows a Nangang hideout
Timber, restraint, windows that open onto green enough to make people mutter about Kyoto. That's the grammar Greenriver perfected in its Xindian old house, and it's carried the whole way to Archive, the second location down a quiet Nangang side street.
The house-roasted espresso runs layered rather than loud. The daily-baked Basque cheesecake sells through most afternoons, and it gives Nangang, a district of office towers and exhibition halls, something it never had: a reason to linger.

Coffee was okay, french toast wasn’t as bad as the reviews mentioned. I was waiting outside for 10+ mins under the heat when I’ve made multiple eye contacts with the staff and there was an empty seat right in front of me. I sat next to the windows and the heat was unbearable. The scooters outside were very unpleasant as well. As someone who’s lived in Kyoto for a few years, if this is trying to mimic “Kyoto aesthetics”, this isn’t it lol.

Finally made the pilgrimage! This wooden-themed coffee shop I'd seen so many times online ☕️ I arrived around 3 PM on a weekday afternoon, and the wait was about 15-20 minutes. Only the first floor was open for dine-in (the second floor seemed too hot without air conditioning). The tables near the bar were the perfect height, perfect for reading or using a laptop. The tables in other areas were lower. There's a sliding door behind the bar area for easy access. There are about 30 seats for dine-in. You order and see the menu at the central counter, and pay before your meal. Today I ordered the Colombian Ice Roast. It was very clean, and the fruity aroma was quite noticeable, but maybe because I haven't had coffee in a while, the finish tasted a bit like beans… I saw quite a few people ordering French toast; I'd like to try that next time! The overall atmosphere was very comfortable. I recharged a lot this afternoon 🔋 By the way, the stairs to the second floor were a bit scary; the floor upstairs didn't feel very safe.

The atmosphere is nice and the space is comfortable. The coffee is good, but I wouldn’t recommend the food—the tiramisu is actually just tiramisu-flavored ice cream. However, I wouldn’t suggest staying for too long, as the side windows are open and the noise from scooters outside can be quite loud.
