Sue's Kitchen

Real coffee and burgers, feet from the runway

Grab a table close enough to watch every landing at Funafuti International Airport. Sue's Kitchen sits right beside the tarmac in Vaiaku, the only flat, open ground in town when a plane isn't due.

Suzanne Kofe runs it, and she filled a gap that had sat empty for years: real coffee instead of instant. The menu stays practical, burgers, fish and chips, milkshakes, built around an island where the supply boat comes once every few weeks.

Good to know

  • It's the only place on the island reliably pouring proper coffee, not instant.
  • Grab a seat facing the runway to watch planes land while you eat.

Great Local Spot Close to the Airport, with Great Food at a Great Price served professionally from friendly staff.. Hope they have Roast Chicken available for you, however everything is great here… Enjoy…

On a small island, every restaurant matters, and Sue’s Kitchen is one of those places that has clearly earned its reputation. What makes Sue’s Kitchen special isn’t elaborate presentation or fine-dining ambition. It’s consistency, generosity and a genuine understanding of what people want when they sit down to eat. The food is fresh, flavourful and satisfying, showcasing local ingredients with confidence rather than complication. What makes the experience uniquely Tuvaluan is the location. Situated beside Funafuti’s airport runway, diners can watch island life unfold around one of the most unusual public spaces in the Pacific. When flights aren’t arriving, the runway becomes a place for walking, cycling, playing sport and gathering with friends. There are not many places in the world where dinner comes with a front-row seat to both community life and the occasional aircraft arrival. What stood out most was the atmosphere. There is a steady stream of locals and visitors alike, which is usually the best indication that a place is doing something right. The staff are welcoming, the service is relaxed but attentive, and there is a warmth that immediately puts you at ease. As a visitor to Funafuti, dining here feels like an opportunity to experience a little of the island’s everyday life rather than simply eating a meal. The setting is unpretentious, the hospitality is genuine, and the food delivers exactly what it promises. Sue’s Kitchen has become something of an institution in Funafuti for good reason. It is honest food, prepared with care, and served with the kind of hospitality that stays with you long after you’ve left Tuvalu.

Food was good (fresh fish). We had to order inside, otherwise nobody's coming. Tables on the terrace with views of the landing strip. We saw a rat running up the stairs and on the roof.

The roasted chicken and fried fish fillet at this restaurant are quite tasty. However, a small tip for other diners: be sure to check if the meat is fully cooked, as it can sometimes be a bit underdone and might cause an upset stomach. Overall, the flavors are great, but just double-check before you eat!

For Tuvalu this is definitely the nicest eating establishment I came across. The menu is limited, but in Tuvalu that is par for the course. The lamb & chips was tasty and the staff very friendly. Lovely spot to watch the plane land.
