Wavestone Café does three jobs at once on Tuvalu Rd: bakery, coffee shop and casual restaurant. That's rare on an atoll where most kitchens pick one lane and stick to it. Everyone just calls the owner Marriane.

Regulars come for the tuna sashimi, cut from fish landed that same day, and whatever cake happens to be in the case that week. With only a handful of places to eat in Funafuti, this is the one travelers and aid workers keep pointing each other to.
