23 Ugandan makers, one shop, inside the Sheraton arcade

Skip the airport shop. This is where hotel guests find jewellery, bags, ceramics, toys and clothing from 23 Ugandan artisans, each piece tagged with the maker's name rather than a house label. Most of it is made from Ugandan materials.

The shop sits in the Sheraton Kampala's shopping arcade, doing a job craft village stalls can't: putting local work directly in front of travelers staying downtown. Forgot a gift before you packed? They deliver around Kampala.

Good to know

• The arcade is on the hotel's lobby level and you can walk in without being a guest.
• Ask who made a piece - the staff work by maker name.

  Kathy makes absolutely awesome custom clothes. Highly recommend messaging her for whatever you need. Check out her Facebook page for Sawe Creations. I just had some shirts made that she got done so quickly and at a really good price before I had to travel.
