Stable Wines: atmospheric and professional bar photo

Stable Wines

★ 4.3 · 44 reviews London Opened December 2025

A wine shop on Essex Road hiding a much bigger cellar bar

From the street, Stable Wines looks like a straightforward wine shop. Head downstairs and the room gets bigger, darker and considerably more fun than the frontage lets on. That gap between what you expect and what you get is most of the appeal.

It's from the team behind Goodbye Horses, the Newington Green wine bar, and it sells bottles to take away just as readily as it pours them by the glass. Essex Road has filled with independent bars over the past few years without turning into a strip; this one fits right in.

I recently visited Stable Wines and had a really pleasant experience. The atmosphere was cozy, stylish, and relaxed, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy a drink. The selection of wines was impressive, with plenty of interesting and well-chosen options. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to offer recommendations. It’s a lovely spot for wine lovers and a relaxed evening out.

Sometimes wine bars can seem quite cheap and tacky; that all they’ve got going for them is the wine, if even! Stable wines is the antethesis of this, the space is beautifully curated, almost giving this cave-like spa vibe, decorated with beautiful Japanese lanterns, tables, benches and bars, all to a level that you really notice how deeply considered everything is. This level of care doesn’t exclusively lay with just the interior you can tell by the wines, stable doesn’t do wine lists, that’s not the point, it’s about trying new wines, recommended by their staff, and there, it’s no exception of how good the recommendations are, the staff know their stuff and you can tell that by the glass. Looking forward to more lovely evenings here!

One of the most gorgeous wine bars I’ve been to in London. The vibe was so intimate and special, the service felt super personal, and I loved the wine (the orange selection in particular was great). Definitely a new favourite spot.

Really nice wine and food with a great setting for dinner or drinks. The cave tables are slightly too dark but still look pretty cool

The space is great, we tried some interesting wines and the food was mostly good. As a group of seven, we shared the oysters (good), cheese toastie (really good and richness cut through with the onions), raw beef and fried potato soldiers (nice), prawns, eggs mayonnaise and sorrel (felt the mayonnaise overpowered the dish), tomato tartine (good), fried mont d'or (Overly rich and baking it could have been better) and the baguette and butter. Our waitress wasn't particularly warm and when we asked for wine recommendations there was no discussion of budget before bottles were brought over.
