Mattie Lou's Cafe and Bakery

European-style baking fills the old Geraldine's spot

Skip the standard American-cafe muffin. Mattie Lou's bakes on European technique, and the breads and pastries taste like it, denser, more deliberate, worth the trip up Merrimon Avenue.

It moved into the North Asheville space Geraldine's Bakery left empty, filling a real gap in the neighborhood. Parking's actually easy here, a rarity on this strip.

Stopped in after seeing their new breakfast menu online, which looked amazing, but was told breakfast ended at 11 when we arrived at 11:05. Totally get not being able to serve it after 11, but there was nothing on their social media explaining that breakfast hours end at 11 so we were bummed. It would be great to advertise that! Ended up getting a chai, which was good, and my husband got a ham/cheese croissant. There was no offer to heat it up, which was also a little disappointing. May try again another time on a better day before 11!

This place was incredible! An absolutely delicious chocolate chip cookie. And I tried a Kouign-Amman which was so good that we went bought and bought the remaining stock of them. A must try when you come to Asheville!

We enjoyed our savory Danish and buttermilk biscuit with eggs, cheese, and avocado for breakfast. Everything tasted fresh. Would love to try more things from them
