General store, antiques shop and coffee bar, all under one roof

Coffee first, browsing second. Shirley's Mercantile on Maybank Highway runs a full coffee bar up front, with Bright Light Bakery sourdough, then opens into a general store built like the 1920s to 1940s version, not a themed replica: housewares, antiques and vintage books mixed with local goods.

When the weather holds, the book tables move out onto the pavement. It's part of a small wave of new James Island antique shops aimed at younger buyers, a step away from downtown's more formal antiques trade.

Good to know

• The sourdough comes from Bright Light Bakery and goes early.
• Open 7.30am on weekdays, so it works as a coffee stop before the shop side gets busy.
