Ladybird Books

A one-room King Street bookstore with its own Southern memoir section
Skip the chain math. Ladybird is one room and one buyer, small enough that owner Summer Anderson has actually read most of what's on the shelves. She grew up around Books-A-Million but built this the opposite way, on purpose.
The standout is the Southern memoir section, pulled out from general biography and given its own shelf. It's part of a small literary revival on the peninsula, alongside Buxton Books a few blocks away, after a decade of independents losing ground to national chains here.
Good to know
- Open daily, 10am to 6pm - one of the few King Street shops that does not shut early on Sundays.
- Ask about the Southern memoir shelf; it is the buy the shop is organised around.

This is my favorite bookstore in downtown Charleston! All the books, notebooks, stationary, prints, and cards are gorgeous and so fun. Anytime I walk in I instantly feel happy and peaceful

Local Bookstores are the way to go. Charleston, has so many to chose from. They helped me pick out my souvenir cookbook for this trip. I have never been to two local books stores with the same vibe. All different vibes, different stories of how they became. They are the heart of towns. Can't wait to see yall again next month 📖

What can I say about Ladybird Books?! I came in a few weeks ago looking for a good read and I was assisted by the most professional, kind, and knowledgeable associate in retail I have ever met. Carson made the experience for me. Thank you Carson for your help. Since I live in Mt. Pleasant, I rarely make it downtown Charleston. I am coming back again just to see her!

This is the best bookstore in Charleston. Highly recommend for anyone looking for local bookstore charm with a good selection of new books and classics. They make the most of their space and have both a great offering while also prioritizing aesthetics.
