Flynn McGarry's home goods shop, with a bakery running in the middle of the room

A pastry case in the center of a home goods store sounds odd until you see it working. Shelves mix flea market finds with kitchenware, and that middle station turns out fresh pastries alongside produce and flowers, all from the chef who made his name as a teenage cooking prodigy.

Gem Home took over Gem's old tasting menu address at 181 Mott Street, a few blocks from his wine bar Gem Wine. Less design shop, more a kitchen you can actually buy pieces of.

Good to know

  • Open daily 9am-6pm; the café bakes its own bread and pastries, so mornings are the best time to combine shopping and breakfast.
  • Stock rotates between new home goods and flea-market finds McGarry sources himself.

Best cafe and bakery I’ve been to so far. Beautiful wooden tables, plenty of healthy options, and the server was incredibly kind and welcoming.

Absolutely loved this spot. The atmosphere is incredible — peaceful, almost monastery-like, but in a warm and welcoming way. It feels very intimate and secluded. I went for the classic set, and everything was delicious. Definitely recommend if you’re in the mood to try something unique!

Beautiful and BIG space with delicious, fresh food. The cinnamon roll genuinely blew me away and was able to be heated up upon request. The matcha latte was small for the price, but genuinely one of the best quality I’ve ever had in the city. I do wish they had a house syrup/sweetener besides simple syrup and honey available. Definitely gets busy and there is no WiFi available, but it was a lovely environment to get work done once the lunch rush died down.

This spot is such a unique find! On one hand, it’s a cozy family cafe filled with wooden tables, wicker chairs, hanging tapestries, and dripping candles. The atmosphere sits right in that sweet spot between Scandinavian hygge and California casual—definitely not your typical NYC vibe. On the other hand, it doubles as a shop for vintage and designer treasures that the owner, Flynn, picks up on his travels. He literally brings an extra suitcase just to fill with finds from Mexico, Kyoto, Paris, and Copenhagen. A must-visit for coffee and curation lovers alike!

The coziest coffee shop ever! We tried over five different dishes, from pastries to salads, and everything was absolutely perfect. A big thank you to Francis, who was so kind and attentive throughout our visit. We’ll definitely be coming back :)
