Spruce Hill bagel counter built around absurd cream cheese combinations
Schmear opened in Spruce Hill in April 2025 and treats cream cheese as the main event rather than the spread. You build your own combination, and the number of possible ones is the whole gimmick. Sandwiches and Rival Bros coffee round it out.
It's a morning place, small and quick. Go on a weekday if you want a seat, because 44th Street fills up with students the moment classes let out.

Came for the name “Schmear,” stayed for the bagels! As New York, New Jersey bagel connoisseurs, we were pleasantly surprised. GET YOUR BAGEL DOUBLE TOASTED! Hit this jawn up :) absolute fire! Schmear exceeded expectation! “the Boss” bagel sandwich came with the Ketchup, salt, pepper, Taylor ham! A classic for a great price in the city! Bagel was crisp outside, with a nice chew inside. Slightly soft, breadier interior. Would’ve wanted a few more seeds on the everything egg bagel, but it packed good flavor and chew. Lots of selections, also enjoyed the blueberry with honey pecan cream cheese. Service was quick. Barista was friendly, and our dirty chai coffees were great. Hash brown was alright for a $1.50 on the side. It didn’t seem homemade, but it was crispy nonetheless. Only minor complaint was they did give us an incorrect bagel. We ordered 1/2 a dozen online, and they switched one out by accident. So just check your online order before leaving! 3 outdoor tables and a few countertop seats inside. Overall recommend to go though!

They’re very cool people, who happen to make extremely delicious and comforting food. Yes the playlist is always great, yes it gets busy, but it’s provocative, it gets the people going.

10/10 bagel and coffee. Went for a pickup order this morning - bagel was delicious and the coffee was great. Very nice service from the young lady in the front who made my coffee!

Such a gem of a spot! West Philly def needed a good bagel spot & this place is it. Today we got the Cali on a sesame & the Loxsmith on an everything! Both soooo delish & fresh. The shop itself is very small so it does get crowded in the AM, I recommend ordering ahead of time. They also serve Rival Bros coffee & have amazing popsicles & ice cream sandwiches. Def a new go to spot for me!!
