Five rooms in a historic Old City row home

This is closer to a grand guesthouse than a conventional hotel, five rooms total. A garden sits at the back, and the interiors play up the building's period details.

The Gas Lamp Hotel opened in 2024 inside a historic row home on North 2nd Street in Old City, blocks from Elfreth's Alley. The small scale cuts both ways: it doubles as an event venue and sells out easily. In May 2026 the owners listed it for $2.95 million, still fully operational.

Good to know

  • With only five rooms, book well ahead, the whole hotel is often taken over for private events.

Lovely, if you like boutique and unique, do it. Be prepared to carry your suitcases up the stairs like in Europe. Also, check -in and out is easy, so don't let that worry you. Loved it!

We stayed in the Latimer last night and it was fantastic. Great location, fun, quirky vibe, clean room, comfortable bed. The entrance reminded us of our favorite hotel in Venice, Italy. Will stay again if we find ourselves back in Philly.

I stayed in the Davy room for three nights and the location is amazing and the room is really charming however I have a couple of minor caveats. First, the room was very very cold (60 degrees) when I first arrived and it turns out that the controls in the room are disabled. I thought I had turned it up and I went out for the evening then came back and the thermostat still said it was only 61 degrees but the comforter is thick and I slept fine. It was only when I woke up and it was still 61 that I realized that even though the controls said it was set to 68 the heat wasn't coming on. I finally called the contact number and they told me that it was controlled remotely so I asked that they set it to 68 and they said ok. Over the next two days, however, it remained set to 66 which is still pretty chilly (since it was under 50 degrees outside over night this meant that it never actually cracked 66 in the room). There *are* two small electric space heaters in the room so I made use of those and I wasn't in the room much, so overall it didn't ruin my stay or anything but still - at the very least if the occupant can't set the temperature it should say that explicitly up front so you can call right away instead of fiddling with the controls for a full day like I did *and* if they say they will set it to 68 they should set it to 68, not 66. Second, the shower takes *forever* to warm up. Like 5 minutes not like 90 seconds. Again like the temperature controls for the room I got to the point where I thought I was doing something wrong or that the water heater was just not functioning because it was taking so long to warm up. I finally just left it running and went and checked my email and came back before it finally got warm enough to use. Again not a deal breaker but something that they should warn you about; I bet a lot of people get in a cold shower the first day because they assume it isn't working.

Booking was easy and parking was close by. The neighborhood was quiet, safe and not far from Old City restaurants and attractions. You enter your code to get access to the property, building and room. The room is gorgeous and super cozy. The bathroom is spotless, spacious with a unique design. There is a Nespresso machine with a great selection of coffee and signature mugs which you can purchase. They have beautiful stemmed glasses available for use. There is a cool wood framed tv on the wall. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well! I love the winding stairwell bc it has so much character but it may be difficult to navigate if you are not good on your feet or have difficulty climbing stairs. This is a fantastic place to stay if you just need a place to have a great night sleep. It is simple with no amenities, breakfast, restaurant or bar. Just peace and quiet. We will stay again!

This is the perfect place to stay for the quiet and independent traveler. Check in is all online, pretty seamless if you follow the instructions! This is a small, but lovely hotel decorated with fine curation and homage to historical Philly. The room was just as listed and photographed— very clean and the bed was so comfortable! My room was a bit cooler (my preference) but space heaters were provided. The only feedback is that the water pressure of the shower was a bit weak, but I was given a heads up about water maintenance happening on the block before my check in. I absolutely recommend this chic and comforting hotel if you plan to stay in Old City! Also if curious, I parked overnight at Old City Parkominium. It was a safe, hassle free, and relatively inexpensive option, and only a 3 minute walk away from the hotel.
