Thai boat noodle soup, done one way

Guay Tiew does one thing and does it with focus: Thai boat noodle soup, the dark, funky broth built on pork blood and warming spice that street vendors once ladled out of boats along Bangkok's canals.

The menu stays narrow on purpose. Get the beef version for the closest thing to the original street food, then add the crispy pork skin on the side. It's a fast, loud room built for a bowl and a quick exit, not a long dinner.

On a chilly day in Portland, I was craving a warm, comforting meal that felt homemade, and that’s how I came across this ramen spot. It was close to closing time, but thankfully they were still serving, so I decided to walk in.Since it was my first visit, I asked the staff for a recommendation and ended up ordering the House Curry. It was absolutely delicious. The bowl was generous in size, and as someone who rarely finishes an entire meal, I was happy to have leftovers to enjoy the next day.One thing I really appreciated was that they keep takeout containers on a counter, so you can pack up your leftovers yourself without having to ask for a box. What stood out to me most was how vegetarian- and vegan-friendly the menu is. Almost every dish can be made vegan, which gives you so many options. The curry had just the right amount of spice and was exactly the comforting meal I was looking for. I left feeling full, happy, and already looking forward to the leftovers. The staff was also incredibly friendly, which made the whole experience even better.

This place was incredible! The salad with wontons was probably my standout dish, but the noodles were a close second! The dessert was a bit on the savory side for me. Overall, I will definitely be back!

I've been here a couple of times for lunch now and both times have been good. The food is consistent and the flavors are on point. I like the boat noodles the best. The curry one was also good and good well with the egg noodles. The tender pork basil stir fry was delicious but was a bit spicy for me this time (I think it may have been the peppers), still worth getting. The service here is pretty quick as you can order from the QR code or up at the counter. On the weekdays, they are only open for lunch on Friday, which is a bummer.

Amazing quality and good value Thai comfort food. As good as Khao Moo Deng on the east side. The staff are passionate and proud of what they serve.
