Denise Arellano's cafe on the old Twiggs corner

Marta took over 2804 Adams Avenue in University Heights, the corner that ran as Twiggs for decades. Denise Arellano named the cafe for her paternal grandmother, whose family worked small Mexican grocery stores across three generations in Calexico and Mexicali.

Arellano trained in New York, cooked under Kyle Knall at Maysville, baked for coffee shops, then worked the line at Valle under Roberto Alcocer, the Michelin-starred kitchen in Baja California. The menu stays narrow on purpose: espresso, matcha, cardamom and chocolate pastries. Get there before 10am if you want first pick of the pastry case.

One of my favorite coffee shops in San Diego! Great light, beautiful handmade cups, and legitimately the most delicious chocolate croissant I’ve ever had (made in house, I believe). I usually get the drip dark roast coffee and it’s very good. Only note is that the WiFi doesn’t always let you join, so be prepared to hotspot if you’re trying to work here.

I came across this café while I was working at another coffee shop nearby, and the bright, open space immediately caught my eye, so I added it to my list. When I finally stopped by, I found it to be a great place to get some work done. They have several small tables inside, and almost everyone there was either studying or working. The staff was friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I ordered a latte and a butter croissant. Both were good, although I was a little disappointed that they don’t offer “for here” cups when I asked. My favorite thing about this café is how bright and airy it feels. The large open windows let in so much natural light and fresh air, making it a really relaxing place to spend a few hours. This has definitely become one of my favorite cafés to work from, and I’d happily come back again. I just hope they start offering ceramic mugs for people who want to enjoy their coffee there.

The best latte I’ve ever had! One of their team members, Denise, recommended mixing piloncillo and rosemary syrups and it created the perfect latte. Will definitely be going back for more!

Super cute atmosphere and plenty of seating! I got the coconut cold brew and the pistachio croissant. Very good drinks and food. Staff were very welcoming and nice.

Marta in North Park is an absolute gem! The pastries were incredible, fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with a lot of care. Every bite felt high quality and perfectly balanced. The coffee was just as impressive, smooth and rich, and paired perfectly with the pastries. You can tell they take pride in both their food and drinks. On top of that, the overall vibe is great, super welcoming and a perfect spot to relax or catch up with friends. Definitely one of my new favorite places in North Park. I’ll be back for sure!
