Little While

A coffee and pastry shop in the old Hawthorn space

Little While opened in October 2025 at 3019 Adams Avenue in Normal Heights, next to Et Voila!, in the room Hawthorn Coffee left behind. It's the first dedicated coffee-and-pastry shop from a team that had spent years running the coffee side of other projects.

Beans come from Provecho in San Diego and Necessity in Encinitas rather than a house roast. Aly Lyng, who built the baking programs at Communion and Paradis, runs the pastry case with Justin Gaspar of Hommage Bakehouse. Guava jam and chile crisp both turn up in it.

I enjoyed my latte and the sweet corn concha. Unique favor to me and very delicious. My friend liked her drink, but the ham and cheese pastry she waited to have heated up was cold in the middle. We did did not have time to wait for it to be reheated again.

It's such a nice touch for you to know the origin of your coffee! Specifically, pour overs. Who brewed them, produced them, roasted them etc. Our pastries were also really yummy. The savory kind was super pleasing. Would come back again! The wait was really long for a weekend so be prepared. My chai was yummy but batch brewed in oatmilk so a little disappointing as whole milk lover but I get why.

Greaaattt coffee! One of the bests. It’s a really nice place and cozy. It is not so big so might need to wait for seating. Since it’s small the tables have an hour limit, so not a good place for working long hours. But it is definitely worth to go for the coffee and atmosphere.

I’ve been a huge fan of the Sweet and Savory Collective for a long time, so I was hyped to finally get into Little While. As someone who spends a lot of time between LA and Mexico, I’m always on the hunt for shops that take their craft this seriously…and these guys absolutely nailed it. Hit this spot for a post-workout breakfast after a session at The Yard Gym down the street. It was busy (standard for Gan and Steven’s concepts), but worth every minute in line. The Standouts: Salted Maple Latte: Perfectly balanced, not overly sweet, and exactly what I needed. Ham & Cheese Croissant: The lamination is world-class. Everything Pull-Apart: Total savory game-changer. The herb cream cheese and seasoning hit just right. The space is stunning: clean, minimalist, and has that intentional 'vibe' that makes you want to hang for a bit. It’s a great addition to Adams Ave and a must-visit if you’re in the neighborhood. Pro-Tip: Expect a line on the weekends, but it moves. If you’re coming from a workout, it’s the perfect reward.

Looking at the low reviews, most people seem hung up on the price and the long lines… welp — if there’s a line, maybe there’s a reason?! Like… it’s hella amazing. And the price? Again — quality coffee costs quality money. I honestly couldn’t disagree more with the low ratings. I can’t rave enough about this place. The service experience is top notch. From the intentional details in the space, to the craftsmanship behind the drinks, to the genuinely chatty and welcoming staff — it’s the kind of spot that makes you want to hang out a little longer. A little while- get it? ;) Also… they make a 10oz americano. That alone tells you they get coffee culture. Even the little things -the aprons, the lighting, the overall vibe -feel thoughtful and elevated. So yeah… wait your ass in line. It’s San Diego. The weather is fine. And it’s absolutely worth it.
