Ghien opened on Balboa Street in May 2026, near Fifth Avenue in the Inner Richmond, doing banh mi and Vietnamese coffee out of a small storefront. The word ghien is Vietnamese for a craving or an addiction, which is a fair description of the intended repeat visit.

Balboa is the Richmond's quieter commercial street, one block up from Clement and with a fraction of the crowd. Sandwiches here are made to order, so it is not a two-minute stop at lunchtime.
