Vietnamese cooking on the Bernal end of Mission Street
The Mantis opened on Mission Street below Cesar Chavez in May 2026, on the stretch that belongs more to Bernal Heights than to the Mission proper. The kitchen is Vietnamese and the room is small.
This part of Mission Street has never had the rent pressure of the blocks north of 24th, and the businesses reflect that: hardware shops, bakeries, a lot of taquerias. A new sit-down restaurant here stands out simply by being new.

Had a few bottles at fat cat that were great but the food at The Mantis blew us away. My group ordered every dish on the menu and there was not a single miss. Amazing flavors. Variety of style of dishes. Ribs, steak frites, eggplant, and croquettes were some favorites but literally nothing was bad. Even the bread and butter starter was amazing.

We had already checked out Fat Cat a few weeks ago and love Jess, Anna and Konner and what they’ve done. Came back last week to check out the mantis and it was just as great. Delicious food and fun atmosphere. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Came on pride weekend. Standing room only but they graciously allowed us to stand at the counter and enjoy thier amazing wine and even more amazing food. Service was so friendly and the vibes of the whole place are fun and laid back. The bar itself feels like a fun place to hang but the food blew my expectations away. Well balanced fusion Vietnamese food that feels distinctly viet American. I will be back to try everything I can and soon.
