Sost

Ethiopian-Eritrean cooking, vinyl and Black-owned wine

Sost works as a cafe in the morning and a wine bar with a record player at night, on 9th Street in Shaw. The owners built it around their Ethiopian-Eritrean background without turning it into a theme.

Berbere-braised chicken and harissa salmon carry the food side. The wine list is drawn from Black-owned vineyards, which is rarer on a DC list than it should be.

I had the best time on my birthday February 15th, @ the AfroTón event (TLC - Tradition. Love. Culture) Black History Month #100year event 🌟🎉🎆👏🏾😎! It was from the afternoon into the evening 🌆. It was so festive: current Black events trivia ❓🗣️, birthday singing to me 🎶🎤, good food 🍔 🍟 (even though you GOTTA break out your card because they don't accept cash 🤷🏾‍♀️), getting to speak and BE a forum Speaker 😭🥹😇 (even it was for 1 question) ?!?, dance how-tos, compliments ✨, meeting 🆒 new people, AND saw a cutie in the crowd 💪🏼- I had the best time!!! Thank you SOST for hosting. Keep me on the email list ✅. I wish I could visit every month ☺️- SOST is beautifully constructed and has several floors: basement event space, floor level, second floor, (maybe a third?) The restrooms are also on the top floors. Planning a themed, close-knit fun event 🎉? Have it here ✅.

I didn’t have food here, but my friends and I randomly stumbled into the bar. Our bartender took care of us. I’m always skeptical of those who make my specific favorite drink. I asked him if he can make it and he said “that’s easy” and he made it perfectly. Kebron thank you for making my drink perfectly! Thank you also for making my friends and I’s night amazing! We had a great time. If you’re looking for somewhere with great drinks, a good vibe and good music. This is the spot. Also when you come ask for Kebron he will make your drink PERFECTLY!

Definitely disappointed! I was so excited to try this place! They have a great happy hour 2-7. We came around 6:30 on a Friday night and were NOT expecting happy hour, so that was a pleasant surprise. The food and service, though, was a bummer. They forgot about the drink we ordered and it took a half hour to get that (it came with the food). I ordered the shrimp basket - which was delicious, but the fries were cold (like actually - the shrimp was piping hot but not the fries - soggy and cool, eww)… so they said they would bring me more. When they came to clear our plates I still didn’t have them and the server said they’re coming right up, she just checked… after another half hour, the manager came over and apologized saying there was a miscommunication and no fries. She refunded the shrimp basket… but I just wanted fries womp womp. Bummer. I won’t be back. It is a cool vibe though. And there’s multiple floors - seemed like an event was happening downstairs (upstairs was closed off).

Oredered the suya . Was not a fan. It was cold. Rice was too salty. Did not enjoy it. Drinks were good. Vibe and music were A*. Server was nice. Would return for the vibes. Dj was great

The ambiance is nice but the prices are a bit high for the food and drinks. I ordered salmon and grits from the brunch menu with an espresso martini. I’ve had better espresso martinis. It was a lil bitter. The food was good but not the best I’ve ever had. The service could be better as well. I kept having to get the servers attention. Not the worst spot but there is room for improvement.
