Coffee by day, Bhutanese whiskey cocktails by night, near the Memorial Chorten
Gikuna is a café, guesthouse and event space in a building with a past: co-founder Kinzang grew up here before it spent 25 years as JICA's Bhutan office. The family later turned it into this hybrid, with a yoga studio and small shops lining the courtyard.
Between the coffee counter and the book launches, thangka workshops and art shows, Gikuna just added an evening cocktail menu built with sister café Kizuna in Singapore, centered on Bhutanese whiskey and ara.

It was much nicer then I expected, very nice sitting area outside and good choice of food options, I personally liked mushroom tacos and the sauce in it reminded me of Mexico 😊 Very nice and friendly ladies working there, the service is super fast, I was surprised by the speed, I would say didn’t get faster service anywhere in Bhutan, so if you are really hungry and don’t want to wait, this is the right place to go 😅

What could go wrong with a pairing of coffee & lamington in the ambient hum of nature. It’s the sensory equivalent of putting yourself on DND with a platter of things to pick from.

I enjoy the food and ambience, especially the carrot cake. Today I had veg lasagna, iced coffee, and carrot cake, and everything tasted good. However, there was some confusion with my coffee order, and the response from the server felt a bit dismissive, which made the experience uncomfortable. I hope communication with customers can be more patient in such situations. Overall, I still like the café and would visit again for the food.
