An old-school cantina in a Plaza Perú alley, named for a maître d'

Skip the theme bars. The alley off Plaza Perú hides a cantina run by the pair behind Mio Noddle, named after co-owner Trujillo's grandfather Juan, an old-school maître d' who treated hospitality as a craft. The kitchen follows his lead: pastas, stews, bread and grilled meats built on technique, not spectacle.

The bar anchors the room, pouring natural wines from the Itata Valley and drinks rebuilt from memory rather than novelty, cola de mono and vermut with a sharper edge. Grab the shared table and settle in.

As a Mexican, I had the pleasure of trying their carnitas tacos. 10 out of 10! Excellent preparation, the touch of the nixtamalized tortillas and the birria broth on the side to add to taste was superb. The best tacos I've had in the region, and as a bonus, they include a shot of tequila. The service was excellent, with attentive staff. And the ambiance was a great concept, blending elements of Spanish and Mexican cantinas.
