Kansai-style oden, ordered piece by piece
Pick your own oden instead of eating whatever combo shows up. That's the deal at this Gough Street diner, where fish cakes, daikon and eggs simmer in a pot right at the front, ready to order by the piece.
The broth follows the lighter Kansai style, not the darker Kanto version more common around Hong Kong. Oden is still a niche category here, and naming Kansai specifically puts Kuke Shokudo in the same lane as single-dish neighbors Butter Babe and DIECI.

The ingredients are fresh, sourced from famous prefectures in Japan, and specially seasoned for each ingredient – high quality! The owner even gave us snacks when they knew we were celebrating our birthday, and thoughtfully introduced the different dishes during the meal.

We made a reservation in advance, especially to celebrate a friend's birthday. The food quality was excellent, and all the ingredients were from Japan. The onions, in particular, were incredibly sweet and came from Awaji Island. Even though I usually hate onions, I found them delicious. The sardine and sweet potato cakes and the whole octopus tentacles are also worth trying!

Delicious! Worth queuing for. A rare oden specialty shop in Hong Kong. The rice balls are also delicious.
