Thai street food, takeaway only, on Mercer Street

Som tam pounded to order, skewers off the grill, sticky rice in banana leaf. Tam Sang runs it fast and cheap, closer to a Bangkok street cart than a sit-down Thai spot. There's almost nowhere to sit, which is the point.

Mercer Street sits on the edge of Sheung Wan's older commercial blocks, near enough to Central to catch its overflow lunch crowd without Central's rents. Tam Sang isn't competing with Sheung Wan's slower restaurant openings. It's going after the cha chaan tengs and noodle shops chasing the same weekday lunch rush.

    ## First-Timer Thai Food Review — Memorable, Authentic, and Worth Coming Back I tried this Thai restaurant for the first time, and from the very first bite it felt like more than just “good food”—it felt *authentic*. The flavors tasted true to the roots of Thai cooking, with that perfect balance of sweet, salty, sour, and heat that makes Thai food so distinctive. What stood out most was the way everything tasted layered and intentional. The herbs and aromatics came through clearly rather than being masked, and the dishes didn’t feel watered down or overly customized for Western tastes. You could genuinely taste the care behind the preparation—like the kitchen understands how Thai food is meant to be cooked. The owner is also hands-on in the best way—**hands cooking** and truly involved in what’s being made. They were **friendly, welcoming, and made the whole experience feel warm and inviting**, not just like a quick meal out. It was also incredibly memorable. Even after finishing my meal, the flavors stayed with me: fresh, vibrant, and comforting in the same breath. It’s the kind of food that makes you think, *“I have to try more from the menu next time.”* Overall, I’d say this place is **definitely worth coming back again**. If you’re looking for Thai food that sticks closely to how it’s traditionally prepared and served, this experience delivered.

The first time we went, we had the stir fry flat noodles with pork and the pork skewers. Both excellent choices. The second time in the same week that we went, our final day in Hong Kong for our final meal, we had the stir fry flat noodles with shrimp, the pad kra pao with beef and the pork neck. We decided this restaurant would be the perfect end to our Hong Kong adventure. The food is amazing and Tommy was a delight. This restaurant is nestled between Michelin star restaurants and not only does it stand on its own, it deserves a star of its own.
