Bars still on the windows, a former prison turned restaurant

The women's prison on Söhtstraße stopped taking inmates decades ago, and THE KNAST kept the bars on the windows and the corridor layout rather than covering them up when White Kitchen designed the conversion. About thirty seats fill the old cell block for an experimental kitchen, with nine hotel rooms and four suites following in 2026.

Queer art shows, exhibitions and ticketed nights run here too, unusual for quiet, villa-lined Lichterfelde. The building is the reason to make the trip.

Good to know

The restaurant and bar have been running ahead of the rooms; check the site for current opening days.
Admission is 18+ and the venue is far south, so plan the S-Bahn back.

The KNAST Berlin is not just a place to eat, it’s an experience you step into. An almost mystical atmosphere and a unique setting shaped by its history. The dining itself is fabulous, beautifully presented and full of flavors that elevate it beyond just a meal. The staff are knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely friendly, making you feel both welcome and intrigued.

We recently returned to Knast for dinner with colleagues and were pleasantly surprised to be greeted once again by our charming French hostess who, just as on our first visit, shone with her professionalism and knowledge of wine, and her delightful personnality. The service was, as always, impeccable, especially with such a warm smile and those little thoughtful touches. With such excellent cuisine (I highly recommend the skrei with wild garlic!), such quality of a service delivered with warmth, there is no doubt that this team truly understands the meaning of "hospitality". Once again, a big thank you to Charlotte for her patience with our table’s specific requests, her humour, her wines passion and her beautiful wit. We will come back.
