Modern Greek plates from a resort kitchen in Paliochori
Root sits inside Artemis Seaside Resort on Milos's south coast, where chef Alexandros Charalampopoulos and chef de cuisine Angelos Gouba build a menu around Mediterranean flavors and island ingredients. It's modern Greek cooking with a strong sense of place.
The menu shifts with the season, but past plates include bucatini done pastitsio style with slow cooked beef, Milos honey and a béchamel foam, plus slow cooked local goat with lemon eggplant purée and roasted tomatoes. Book ahead if you're going in August.

They have a broad variety of really interesting dishes. I had a sort of Greek pasta, which was delicious.

Had some of the sweetest service at this restaurant and really beautiful, delicious food. The atmosphere was a bit odd with quiet club music and the restaurant was virtually empty. Started with the carpaccio fish and meatballs, both of which were very delicious and well balanced. For mains had the goat and deconstructed pastitsio. Both mains had a slow cooked shredded meat which was moist and delicious but similar in texture (our fault for ordering this-should have gotten the grilled pork or fish instead of one of these mains). The goat was delicious although I didn’t taste any lemon in either the lemon-oregano mashed potatoes or the lemon-thyme sauce. It was just a lovely pressed slow cooked square of goat with a really nice Demi glaze and smooth mashed potatoes. Probably the most disappointing dish of the meal just because it didn’t meet the lemon forward expectation. Regardless, still delicious and stunning to look at. The pastitsio was cooked very well although the meat sauce could have included some cinnamon stick to make it feel a bit more traditional, but the bechamel cream was incredible and the pasta was perfectly al dente. This is very much Greek influenced fine dining in the sense that you will get very similar flavours to a taverna but elevated and in a different medium (for example, there was a dill oil that showed up in almost all the dishes, giving a distinctly Greek flavour to elements like mashed potatoes or tomato-bell pepper cream). For dessert we had the tsoureki which had a strong mastiha flavour and came with an incredible pistachio ice cream. A bit disappointed to see that same 17 euro tsoureki bread served at breakfast the next day in the buffet though. Overall a very expensive meal, if you want to experience a fine dining meal by the beach I would recommend but I do feel like it was a bit overpriced despite how clever the menu and elements of the dishes were!

We were pleasantly surprised by the food here. The Steamed Mussels appetizer was a unique and delicious preparation. We also enjoyed our mains — the celery root steak, and goat (husband said it’s the best meat he has had in all of Greece) and the watermelon pie for dessert had lots of great textures and was very light and refreshing. Wish it wasn’t bright as day in the dining room at 10pm. Dimmer lighting would’ve offered a nice ambiance. At least we had a view overlooking the ocean and sunset. Service was standard, nothing exceptional. Would recommend.

One of the best meals we had during our visit to Greece. Delicious dinner. Food was exquisite. The views, the atmosphere, the wine, appetizers and entrees were simply perfect. Attentive and discreet services made the experience even better. Looking forward to going back to Milos and experience Roots again soon
