Bombie's Restaurant
★ 4.5 · 60 reviews Phonsavan Opened Opening date unknown
Home-style Lao, Thai and Western plates, with the owner as your unofficial guide to the province
The name is a grim local joke: bombies are the cluster submunitions still surfacing in fields around Xieng Khouang, and this restaurant uses the word head-on. Inside, the food is home-cooked Lao, Thai and Western fare, cheap and generous, and laarb is the dish most people bring up afterward.
Owner Nouds Phetrasy runs the place and often ends up talking guests through nearby villages and the jar sites, no appointment needed. It sits a short walk off the main strip in Ban Phonsavan Tai, easy to walk past and worth the detour.
Good to know
- Try the laarb, it's the dish regulars keep coming back for.
- Owner Nouds Phetrasy speaks good English and is a solid source for local travel tips beyond the menu.

Very nice place to go when you are in phonsavan! The owner received us very kindly and told a lot about the phonsavan, it's history and he even has a museum in the restaurant with many bomb shells and many Interesting things and stories to tell. Food was amazing also! It was an amazing experience all in all! Very happy to have been there! Cannot recommend it enough!

Bombie’s Restaurant is one of those places that ends up being much more memorable than you expect. The food is genuinely great — simple, fresh, and really well cooked. After a day exploring the Plain of Jars, it’s the perfect place to sit down for a good meal. The portions are generous, the prices are reasonable, and everything we tried tasted excellent. What makes the place truly unique, though, is the atmosphere. The restaurant also doubles as a small informal museum about the Secret War in Laos. The walls are covered with photos, maps, old equipment, and pieces of unexploded ordnance that have been safely deactivated. It’s fascinating to look around while you eat and learn about the history of the region. It’s not a formal museum, but that’s part of the charm — it feels personal and authentic, and you can easily spend time reading the displays between courses. Great food, friendly vibe, and an unexpectedly interesting history lesson all in one place. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in Phonsavan.

We really enjoyed our visits to this restaurant - the food was delicious and there are a couple of vegetarian options to choose from. The place is run by a family and the interior is really interesting - practically a mini museum about Laos with lots of history about the Plain of Jars and the secret war. The owner, Mr Nouds, has lots of interesting information to share (and we really enjoyed his tours of the area which we also took advantage of).

We went as it had been reccomended by many people. However, our food was very average, my vegetable tom yum had very few vegetable in it (see picture) and I was hungry after the meal. The beer was warm and we felt like an inconvenience. The restaurant itself is cool and is family run.

Amazing family owned restaurant. Super friendly especially the owner has a great personality and you feel very welcome as a guest. Atmosphere: Small restaurant with a couple of tables decorated with the family history. Food: Every dish we ordered tasted freshly made and delicious. Especially the vegetarian spring rolls and the rice in coconut milk and Mango were amazing. Super experience and we would definitely visit again.
