East Coast sour beer, back from the flood
Sour and mixed-culture beers were the whole point here before Hurricane Helene flooded South Slope in September 2024, and they still are. The Funkatorium reopened May 1, 2025, with a refreshed menu and new murals on the walls.
The bier garden next door followed two weeks later with more seating. This was the first taproom of its kind on the East Coast, and its comeback told you South Slope was rebuilding, not thinning out.

Every time I’m in town, I can come back here over and over again. If you’re into sour beers, this place is heaven!

I don't drink (anymore) but I go here for choir rehearsals often and the bartenders are great and they carry Stella NA which is a good one. I loved that they had four drafts names for some of the teams in the world cup when I was last there. The space is also really interesting. The small bar and outdoor patio are nice and then there is a huge space in the back with high ceilings where they have brewing tanks but also a fantastic event space where the Asheville Beer Choir practices.

Absolutely loved this spot! The beer selection was fantastic with something for everyone, and the food was honestly just as impressive. Everything came out fresh, flavorful, and perfectly paired with the drinks. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the staff was super friendly and attentive. Definitely one of my favorite local breweries and I’ll absolutely be back!

We are here for a month to explore and the Funkatorium has been our favorite spot to stop at throughout our time here. Shoutout to Dakota for making it that much more special! What an awesome bartender, knows his stuff and is just a really super nice guy to talk to!

We met Jamie and Joey with another couple (and Ziggy) at Eda's on Saturday night listening to music and got to talking about places to go on Easter Sunday and they recommended Wicked Weed Funkatorium and let me tell you we were not disappointed. The staff was super nice, the beer was really good, and the food was awesome. If you're in the Asheville area and looking for a great place to stop for a beer and some really good food then you need to swing by the Wicked Weed Funkatorium. Get the hot honey pepperoni pizza 🍕 😋 😍 and tell Jamie and Joey that Joe and Marlette (Ziggy's friends) sent you.
