Filipino pastries hiding inside a Fubonn food stall

Skip straight past the produce aisles at Fubonn and head for the bakery case tucked among the food stalls. Balong runs a full Filipino spread here, pandesal and ube-filled pastries next to a small savory menu.

Fubonn is already Portland's go-to for Asian groceries, but Balong gives you a reason to linger past the checkout line. Grab a bag of pandesal on your way out. They sell out fast.

This place is so good. Very sweet service and the vegetarian breakfast sandwich with egg and cheese was so savory and delicious. The house made veggie patty is awesome. I tried it on both the cheddar scallion biscuit and the pan de sal and both were excellent. The hashbrown is out of this world.

Food: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Atmo: 9/10 - it's in a back-alley of a grocery store mall; very cute inside the shop (and thankfully overpowered the horrendous Xmas music outside with their own more appropriate music). The old photos on the wall are super cute and really make the place feel personal. A few visits later I tried the hash brown. It was good, but the amount of oil that poured out of the bag was insane. Had to be at least 2 tablespoons! I lifted the smaller bag out of the larger one and a steady stream of oil poured out all over the bag & my car. The video is after all the initial oil had already poured out - still a lot. I dropped it back in the bag and got it out of the vehicle to manage the mess. It was tasty, but I wouldn't recommend due to the excess oil. Be careful if you try it! AMAZING in every way: Best service you could ever hope for. Carlos was warm, friendly, helpful, and generous. It was a pleasure just chatting with him while our food was being made. The food was SO good! The bacon egg cheese biscuit was the best in Portland (sorry GC). The bacon is cooked perfectly crispy, egg wasn't over cooked (still a bit jammy center), biscuit was phenomenal, the pan was good but hard to choose over the biscuit.) I can't wait to try the pastries. While it is a bit pricey, the quality and flavor MORE than justify the cost. It's not like you can find anything close for cheaper in the area/climate.

Delicious and innovative takes on traditional Filipino flavors. I didn’t get any more pictures because I inhaled the food! I got the vegetarian breakfast sandwich and lumpia, as well as a few pastries to share for the table. All delicious.

WOW! The most phenomenal breakfast sandwich I've ever had. The coffee roll and hash browns were perfect. Adorable little spot and great service too. Will absolutely be back for more!

Balong is a hidden gem tucked away in the Fubonn Center and easily one of my favorite breakfast spots in Portland. They serve hands-down my favorite breakfast sammies in the city. Every time you walk in, you’re greeted by a team that immediately makes you feel at home while turning out phenomenal sandwiches and baked goods. They’re also truly part of the community, regularly hosting pop-ups that showcase other local makers and chefs. Places like this are what make Portland’s food scene special
