Portland Art Museum: Mark Rothko Pavilion

★ 4.6 · 6,469 reviews Portland Opened 20 November 2025

A glass pavilion just doubled this museum's galleries

Named for the painter who grew up in Portland, the new Mark Rothko Pavilion adds around 100,000 square feet of gallery space and finally links the museum's separate buildings into one campus.

Outside, a new Cultural District Plaza brings public art and event space to the block. If you last visited years ago, go back: the building is now as much the draw as the art inside it.

Portland's premier art museum newly enlarged and reopened via the cooly elegant and impressive Rothko Pavillion. Recent refurbishment neatly integrates all historic and brand new structures comprising this beloved edifice now filled beautifully with more rare, admirable, illuminating artworks in all eras and genres. Superb Asian, Pacific Northwest Native American, Contemporary Arts, and exceptionally fine European permanent collections. Serious galleries devoted to ultra-fine, A-List, French Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterworks in lively juxtaposition. Enlarged shop and a modest cafe also now on site. So go already and be dazzled!

We came down to see a specific exhibit which was good. We found another exhibit we wanted to see and then went through the permanent collection which was excellent. We were going to eat at the café but the line was too long. The gift shop so was good with lots of variety and it had unique and affordable items for sale. Highly recommend this museum. Staff was friendly and helpful too.

The David Hockney exhibit was wonderful. I also enjoyed indigenous art by Rick Bartow. So much to see, it takes more than a day. Classes, art rental, special events, and rentable space for civic events. Get a dual membership and take a friend. Beautiful experience.

Disappointed with most of the art displayed. I am, by no means any kind or art expert, but 75 to 80 percent of the pieces were not what I would expect to be displayed in an art museum. I have attached a few photos of pieces I was impressed with. Enjoy!

Lovely curation and organization. They had benches as couches of strategic spots. We were on a time crunch so I had to rush through the last 2 floors since I took a long time and enjoyed myself on the first two floors. I especially liked the section of protest photography throughout the years.
