The Eighth Rule

A cocktail bar inside the St. Francis on Union Square
The Eighth Rule opened at 335 Powell in autumn 2025, inside the Westin St. Francis on Union Square. The hotel has stood on this corner since 1904, and hotel bars around downtown have been reopening one by one as foot traffic returns.
The cable car turnaround is a block away, so the crowd mixes hotel guests with people who came on purpose. Go early in the evening if you want to actually hear each other.

The dirtiest, most disgusting, stinky martini of my dreams. It was truly vile and absolutely filthy. Apparently I may be the last human being on Earth to ever receive this exact drink at this bar, so obviously I’m leaving this review primarily as a brag. The real star in this story is Emminscky, who may genuinely be the most caring waitress I’ve ever encountered. She went so far out of her way, that she was borderline risking her job, her reputation, and possibly her freedom all just to make me the exact martini I had been dreaming about.

My husband and I stumbled upon this speakeasy vibe of a bar while staying in San Francisco at the Westin Hotel. We were delighted to realize it was Steph Curry‘s restaurant. The vibe is very moody and cool and the service was impeccable. We only had cocktails and the Parmesan popcorn but it will definitely be a place that we will return on our next visit.

Delicious drinks. Sexy Library vibes, a scene from a novel. Think date night, role play. I ordered the chicken tenders, fries, and you can't go wrong adding caviar. The servers were very attentive to our dietary restrictions. Impeccable service, I'm looking forward to returning.

Vibe is a 70’s basement bar. Pricey without commensurate payoff. Go for the straight bourbons and avoid the cocktail menu: those drinks are tasty but weak: as if bt measured exactly 1 oz of bourbon into the shaker and no more. Good service, good food. I’ve had pop tarts and that sir is no pop tart.
