Constance Tea & Matcha

A matcha and tea bar out at 36th and Balboa

Constance opened on Balboa near 36th Avenue in May 2026, about as far west as a tea bar can go in this city before hitting the beach. Matcha is the centre of the menu rather than one item on it.

The Outer Richmond has been getting more of these small specialist counters as the neighbourhood's younger residents stop driving downtown for coffee. It is a fifteen-minute walk from here to Ocean Beach, which is what most people do with the drink.

Our first time and not our last! We enjoyed our experience here. I ordered the Reserve Matcha latte and my partner the oolong tea. Both drinks were fantastic and this cafe did not disappoint. The cashier was very knowledgeable on the menu and the variety. And the employees were working seamlessly on the busy Sunday morning orders. This may be a tight spaced location for some, but amazing things taste better with patience. Really enjoyed observing the fresh mill grinding as well has their custom tea extractor pulling fresh brews.

I had 24 hours in the Bay, and as a matcha fan, this was at the top of my list!! It was worth it! I wish we had a place like this in LA! We tried the freshly milled matcha, which was so fragrant and had such a vibrant and bright flavor. It was better than the regular match, which was still one of my top matcha lattes I’ve had. The black matcha is also super unique and is not too sweet (a compliment if you’re Asian 😉). All the choices make it so hard to choose but you can’t go wrong w any of them! We were lucky enough to get a tour of the place and learn abt the matcha milling process by the owner Bill. He is so knowledgeable and excited to share his love of w tea everyone. I wish they would open in LA!! But I’ll def be back if I’m in town 😊 Tip: We went on a Sat morning at opening, and the line wasn’t too bad and moved quickly. Street parking was easy to find too.

I wasn’t planning on buying four drinks, but after trying the first one, I ended up ordering four Freshly Milled Reserve Matchas to share with friends and family. The quality here is on a completely different level from most matcha shops. The matcha is incredibly smooth, naturally sweet, and full of flavor without the harsh bitterness that many places try to cover up with extra sugar. You can actually taste how fresh it is. What impressed me most is that Constance Tea & Matcha is the first shop in the Bay Area serving freshly milled matcha. Once you’ve tasted freshly milled matcha, it’s hard to go back to the pre-ground powder used by most cafes. I’ve visited many matcha shops throughout the Bay Area, and this is easily my favorite. If you’re serious about matcha and want to experience what high-quality matcha is supposed to taste like, Constance Tea & Matcha is a must-visit. The best matcha I’ve had in the Bay Area. I’ll definitely be back for more.

Got 3 drinks. First - the freshly reserved milled matcha. Even thought it’s kind of expensive, it was really good. Second/ third drink, the black matcha einspanner & black matcha latte - black matcha is NOT hojicha. It’s a different taste like black tea mixed with notes of chocolate and something else. At first I liked it, but the more I drank it, it wasn’t my preference. The einspanner was better than the latte. The drinks are on the less sweet side and the owner was wonderful to talk to! Next time I wanna try the jasmine!

very pretty cafe ! the matcha is freshly milled and one of the employees gave us a tour of their process and milling machines i got the fresh milled reserve matcha latte which is pretty expensive (~$12) but it’s really good! there is a more normal priced matcha latte as an option as well. would come back, highly recommend 🤍
