RT Bistro

A neighbourhood bistro on Oak at Octavia
RT Bistro opened on Oak Street in autumn 2025, at the Octavia corner where freeway traffic funnels down into Hayes Valley. The format is bistro, which here means a short menu and a room that works for two people on a Tuesday night.
Oak Street is loud and most of its ground floors are garages, so the restaurants that open here need to be worth stopping for, not stumbled into. Patricia's Green is a block away for a walk afterward.

After finally snagging this hard to get reservation, I was disappointed to be waiting nearly 45 minutes until our table was ready. The staff comped our first round of drinks, which was appreciated, however it took about 30 minutes of waiting outside until we were offered drinks in the first place. Once seated our server didn't come to our table for about 15 more minutes. Once the food started to arrive things picked up. The shrimp and eggplant louis was a standout, the sweet potato tempura also very good. The duck breast, pork cheek, and burger all good. Food overall was very nice, but the extreme wait for a set reservation was disappointing for this caliber of restaurant.

The best from the RT team. Yes, better than Rich Table. I’ve tried everything on the menu. Here are my favorites: 1. Shrimp Louie 2. Roast Duck 3. Grilled Asparagus 4. Burger (now that they’ve reduced the bun size after i’ve annoyed the living hell out of them 🤣) They constantly change their menu so some of the above may not be available when you visit, but honestly don’t even fret bc anything you’ll get here is bound to be good. And god forbid you don’t enjoy it. They’ll swap it out for another dish.

As part of an ongoing comparative audit of San Francisco’s 2026 high-intent dining openings, I conducted a performance review of RT Bistro this evening. The goal: to determine if the kitchen's operational execution matches the high-velocity hype surrounding the Rich Table team's latest project. My audit of RT Bistro was a deep dive into the kitchen's ability to maintain high-output consistency. Upon arrival at opening, the front-of-house demonstrated a well-rehearsed flow; the doors opened promptly, and the welcome was professional. I chose a vantage point at the end of the dining room, which allowed for a full-room operational scan as the space reached capacity. The Service Variable: I noted an inconsistency in service protocol: bread service was provided as a complimentary gesture at our table, though it was not extended to the broader dining room. This suggests a discretionary service-drift rather than a standardized institutional policy—a key note for those benchmarking their FOH consistency. The Audit Performance: Porcini Doughnuts: Technically flawless. The aeration of the dough was perfect, and the porcini-caviar pairing represents an excellent mastery of umami-forward pastry. Jidori Hen Egg: A decadent, splurge-worthy treatment. The infusion depth confirms a kitchen that prioritizes high-end technique even on 'simple' proteins. Caesar Salad: A modern, deconstructed take. The pea/parmesan-crisp architecture provides a refreshing textural contrast to the usual romaine-heavy salads. Cheeseburger: An elite-tier execution. The structural integrity of the bun—which held its shape against the patty's jus until the final bite—was the standout metric here. Dumplings: Well-constructed with a robust vinaigrette; technically proficient. The Operational Outlier: One-Layer Lasagna: This was a technical miss. While the concept (a vegetable-forward, open-faced construction) is theoretically sound, it currently lacks the necessary balance. The profile was dominated by an aggressive lemon-spinach application that entirely masked the pasta. It felt incomplete, and for a kitchen of this caliber, it suggests a need for fundamental recalibration of the acid-to-vegetable ratio. The Closing: The Cali Cheesecake Brûlée is an intriguing final course. The brûlée crust was precisely tempered, but the real highlight was the Douglas Fir cookies—a terroir-driven detail I haven't encountered elsewhere. Bottom Line: RT Bistro is a reliable, high-intent destination for the burger and the doughnuts. The kitchen shows flashes of brilliance, but steer clear of the lasagna until they resolve the current structural imbalances."

Good, with caveats for the price. The tightly packed tables add a lively atmosphere, the servers are knowledgeable, and the service was mostly good, though not flawlessly polished. At one point there was confusion over whether the order they had brought us was actually ours, which is not quite the ballet you expect at this price point. The portions are also on the smaller side, and not every dish earns its keep. The beef tartare was a miss. The lasagna was also a miss, and I genuinely don’t understand the hype. To me, it tasted like cheese and vegetables on flatbread, which is not exactly a revelation. The pork cheeks were very well cooked, but for the price I expected something more memorable. Same story with the duck: good, but not quite special enough. We didn’t try the famous porcini doughnuts, which we love from Rich Table, because paying 2-3x the price just because caviar joined the party felt a little hard to justify. The burger, however, was divine. We ordered a second one, which tells you everything. Juicy inside, crisp outside, beautifully soggy under bun, easily one of the best I’ve had. The fries were also excellent: crunchy without being overdone, with that famous umami topping doing glorious things. Desserts were another strong point. Both the ice box pie and chocolate cake were excellent. The ice box pie was beautifully creamy and airy with just the right touch of crumble, and the chocolate cake was decadent without being heavy. For two people, my move would be: get the kampachi crudo (didn’t try but heard the table next to us praise it), two burgers, both above desserts, and skip the rest. Outdoor tables are covered, include heaters, and did not look as cold as you’d think. Pro tip: the indoor corner table looked great for dates.

I really love RT rotisserie and Rich Table and go there pretty regularly and was super excited for a new restaurant. Burger was alright nothing mind blowing. $30 seems a bit steep, the show stopper was the delicious lasagna!!
