Chilaquiles where the Varsity Restaurant stood for 62 years
The Varsity Restaurant served Ravenna for 62 years and closed. Mama Grande's took the space on NE 65th and opened in February 2026.
Brunch survived the handover, with chilaquiles and crab benedict on the list now. Regulars from the old place still show up, which tells you something.

We had such a wonderful experience at Mama Grande’s! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was absolutely lovely. You can tell they truly care about their guests and put a lot of heart into what they do. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully served. A wonderful place to enjoy a great meal and feel right at home. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Staff was very friendly, environment was very clean. Banana French toast: Delicious and flavorful Chicken Sandwhich: bacon had the perfect crisp and fries were delicious! Chilaquiles: wouldn’t recommend but I am Latino so these were more whitewashed than true authentic Mexican chilaquiles. Rate them 3/10. But I heard they’re a hit here to locals! Definitely recommend this restaurant for breakfast/brunch vibe!

Absolutely delicious food that also looked gorgeous! Staff are kind, courteous and attentive. Seated quickly and food came out quickly as well. Staff really works together to give you the best service. They are not only kind to the guests but kind to each other. Since I sat at the bar I could see these interactions. We had Banana Foster French toast and Huevos Rancheros and it was the best breakfast I've had all year. We were tempted to get the special Ube pancakes with strawberries and Ube Ganache because it also looked SOO good! I will definitely come here again. I wish I lived in the neighborhood!

We ordered huevos rancheros and cochinita, both were delicious. The cochinita was specially tender and full of flavor. We also tried the French toast which was really good. The service was great and Edgar was very friendly and attentive. We will definitely be coming back!

We thought we would give this place a try, based on the high reviews, and we were not disappointed. I love what they have done with the interior, giving it more of a stylish cafe feel. I loved my vegie omelet, with gouda cheese perfectly melted. My wife had the pancakes with berry compote and really loved them. She also had bacon, which was prepared perfectly. The service was attentive and friendly without being intrusive. We will definitely be back.
