A Maryland deli with a self-serve pickle bar, downtown
Mikey & Mel's crossed the line from Maryland into downtown DC in January 2025, bringing a deli menu that does not cut corners. Meats cured in house, bagels boiled every morning.
Knishes, latkes, hand-sliced nova. There is a self-serve pickle bar, which is either the best or the worst thing about lunch on L Street depending on how you feel about half-sours.

Just read through the reviews. Either there was an entire regime change or I just came on the right day. I ordered a Bacon, Egg n Cheese on White Toast. Man!! The last bite was better than the First, and the First made me wish I'd ordered Two!! (That changed by the end, because ChowComa kicked in something fierce!) I used my Galaxy 8+ as a size reference. Toast was top notch, Bacon was Crispy/Chevy (that perfect bite for a breakfast sandwich) and the Eggs were pillowy and plentiful! I added the fried onions, cuz I thought it'd be tasty (it Was), and I wasn't planning on talking to anyone, Mayo and Extra Cheese (UN-NECESSARY). Came up to just over $9. I'm Not mad. Can't speak for the rest of the menu, but the breakfast sandwiches are On Point!

LOVE this DC deli!!! The food is great and the people are even better! If you need comfort food--I especially recommend the matzo ball soup--this is the place!!

Food is fantastic. Great sandwiches, great selection of Jewish baked goods and other items. Pickle bar is great as well. I don’t really like the experience with the screens and ordering. I get that it saves on labor, but it really takes away from the vibe and experience. And then the staff is kind of poorly trained and nobody really helps and it’s just not a super pleasant experience. I think at least cutting down on the number of screens and encouraging more counter ordering would help it feel more authentic. Giving it 5 stars because the food is excellent and for bringing some of my favorite foods to a great location in downtown dc and staying open on the weekend, you guys deserve 5 stars!

I love this deli and come here often. They do a lot of things right. It’s a little pricey, but I think it’s worth it. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the food is amazing. I was in about two weeks ago celebrating two birthdays and was surprised to learn that the deli doesn’t do anything for birthdays, not even a complimentary cookie. It feels like a missed opportunity to make customers feel a little more special. Will I choose it for a birthday lunch again? Probably not. Will I continue to eat here? Absolutely.

We were in the area and stopped by Mikey & Mel’s for a quick bite. It was good! We ordered the bagel breakfast sandwich and a side of matzo ball soup to share. The sandwich was solid, with fluffy eggs and thick cut bacon on a fresh bagel. The matzo ball was moist and tender, which served in a comforting broth. I would have liked a touch more seasoning (had to add salt while eating for my taste), but it was still very satisfying. The real surprise though is the pickle bar. They offer an impressive variety of pickles, and we legit tried every flavor. My favorite was the horseradish pickle. It’s sharp, flavorful, and not overly acidic. It’s free with a meal purchase, so definitely don’t skip it. The restaurant is bright, clean, and welcoming. There are plenty of seating for solo diners, couples, or groups. Vibe is relaxed and inviting. I need to come back and try their pastrami. Very curious how they compare.
